Board of Directors

from an interivew that first appeared in our
April-June 2008 Newsletter, TLC Connections.

Helen Cobb
It was in 1999 that I first connected with TLC. My son, Brad, came to interview with staff with the hope of moving out of the group where he had been living for over 20 years. What we value most about TLC is that they listened to us and were supportive of my son’s dream to live alone and find peace in his chaotic life of Group Home Living.
My background besides being Brad’s Mom, was in Nursing. I have been retired now for 5 years. My life is full volunteering, knitting projects, ushering at the 5th Ave Theater, and traveling when I can. I love the Auburn Symphony season tickets with Brad very much.
Serving on the Board of TLC is very important to me. Being of support to the staff and cheer them on as carry our the mission of TLC has been life changing for me.

Meghan McManus
I heard about TLC through the United Way. I was looking for a disability organization where I could be of use. Well, I am an auditor. So, I am super busy right now. I work in the Not for Profit Government subgroup at Moss Adams LLP. I am from Chicago and moved to Washington almost two years ago. I live in Kent and have two dogs and a boyfriend to keep me busy at home. Previous to public accounting I worked as the CFO of Health and Disability Advocates in Chicago.
I have a bachelor and two masters and while in school I worked with adults with multiple learning disabilities in a residential collegiate environment. I love the dog parks! Off leash parks are very cool. You don’t see much of those in Chicago.
I love that people have choice. Without it, I don’t think you can claim to promote independence. Besides the work background I listed above, I grew up ADHD and know how important the right supports are in trying to succeed in life. Also, my bachelor’s is in Elementary Education. I spent time working in special education classrooms.

Ken Miller
Ken Miller is a self-advocate who lives I the Everett area. Any of us at TLC have know Ken for several years and through several different projects and groups. Ken was not available for our interview.

Steve Schain
I have known Lyle and Mary for many years through my advocacy work on behalf of people with developmental disabilities. They invited me to join the Board.
I enjoy Tacoma for all the opportunities to work with interesting people who volunteer to make Tacoma a better community. I appreciate TLC’s commitment to providing quality personalized services to all the people they serve that leads to as much community inclusion as possible. My connections to TLC include knowing Lyle and Mary for many years. TLC serves one of my former Lincoln students with autism, and I have a sister living in Tucson with a developmental disability.
